I’ve been crawling through Peninsula attics since 2016, and I still carry a headlamp in my truck that I bought my first month on the job. The thing is held together with electrical tape and stubbornness. I started Topside Attic Insulation Mountain View because I got tired of watching homeowners pay for blown-in fiberglass over leaky top plates and being told they’d see “significant energy savings.” Significant how? I wanted numbers. Now we publish before-and-after blower-door readings on every air-sealing job, and I sign off on every written scope before a crew starts work. I’m BPI Building Analyst certified, and I have a particular grudge against can-light housings that were never IC-rated. When I’m not measuring stack effect in a Los Altos Hills crawl space, I’m usually restoring a 1978 Chevy K10 that has worse insulation than most of the homes we fix.
Marcus T., Senior Installer
Marcus has been with us four years, and he’s the reason our spray-foam jobs in Mountain View don’t have the cold spots that plague so many foam installations. He’s Demilec-certified for medium-density closed-cell application and has a preternatural ability to spot when a substrate is too cold to accept foam, which happens more than you’d think in January garages near the bay. Before he joined us, he spent six years doing marine insulation for boatyards in Alameda, which taught him more about vapor drive than any classroom could. He plays bass in a Sunnyvale punk band that practices in an uninsulated warehouse, and he complains about it constantly but never fixes it. That tells you he’s honest; he knows what the job costs and he knows what his landlord won’t pay.

Elena is who answers when you call (669) 259-0406 at 7:45 on a Tuesday because your PG&E bill just arrived and you’re staring at a number that doesn’t make sense. She’s been scheduling building-envelope work in Santa Clara County since 2019, and she knows which Mountain View permits require a same-day fire-department inspection and which don’t. She holds a HERS rater certification, which means she can actually explain why your duct blaster results matter for Title 24 compliance instead of just reading you a script. Elena grew up in a 1948 ranch in the Monta Loma neighborhood with zero wall insulation, and she still remembers her father stuffing bath towels into the window frames every December. She keeps a photo of that window on her desk. It keeps her motivated.
Jonas K., Apprentice Technician
Jonas joined us in 2023 after two years doing weatherization for a nonprofit in East Palo Alto. He’s our designated attic-cleaning and rodent-proofing specialist, which means he’s seen things in old Mountain View insulation that would qualify as biohazards in a reasonable world. He’s working toward his BPI certification and already runs our insulation-removal jobs with minimal supervision, including the HEPA-contained removals we do when there’s evidence of rodent activity or deteriorated vermiculite. Jonas is the one who actually reads the Material Safety Data Sheets and reminds the rest of us when we’re being cavalier about respirator fit tests. He lives in a studio in Castro Street and is slowly air-sealing it on weekends, one outlet gasket at a time. He texts Wes photos of his blower-door progress. Wes has not yet responded.
